December 2006, Honoring CommitmentThe Pantheon of Leather Community Service Awards 2007 Nominations are in and we set a new record for nominations. There is a good mix from all over the United States and Canada. The International category was the weakest with five nominees, but that was up from last year's whopping total of three. Everywhere else had good numbers. As in every year, there were a few conspicuously missing names. As those who were there know, I was not there to receive my award. I had made a prior commitment to the Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert to be a judge at their contest the same weekend a full year ago. I felt it was right to honor my prior commitment rather than jump ship to attend a weekend where I would be feted in front of 2,000 or more people. I remember a couple of years when we got the reigning IML to commit to Pantheon, the man was offered a better deal elsewhere and they gave us the slip, one let us know about three weeks before our event that he was going for a better offer. Both seemed to rub it in a bit too. While we had to just smile and take it, the hurt was there That is obvious because I'm mentioning it several years later. The point is, Leatherfolk should honor their commitments. I've asked contestants during interviews at Leather contests periodically, "If you were committed to participating in an event, but were offered something else later, would you switch or stay with the first one and why?" To a man or woman the answer was always to honor the first commitment. Never mind the fact that one of those who gave this answer was one of the IML's who later stiffed Pantheon of Leather. It was a question which begged for a politically correct answer, so I've stopped asking it the last few years. There are certain unwritten rules of Leather and honoring commitment is one of them. Remember the "Trust, Honor, Respect" thing? I believe I did the right thing. I had a blast in Palm Springs and never considered Palm Springs Leather Pride to be a lesser. When the committee that works on the Mr. and Ms Olympus Leather Contest appointed Jazz and Stewart as producers of the Florida Olympus Leather Contest we immediately received a lot of flak from a handful of people. We were informed of all the bad things about them one could imagine. You would think that the two were an Al Quaeda cell laying eagerly in wait for marching orders from Osama bin Laden. We knew that the couple was controversial, but we stayed with them after the wave of protest. They were given the opportunity to prove themselves. Rudolph was going to get to pull Santa's sleigh that weekend and they did it well. There were a few glitches, but not any more than many other first-time events have. Those who attended had a great time. There is much to be done, but the 90 Florida Leatherfolk who participated had a great time with a strong Leather spirit there. There were Leatherfolk from adjoining states on top of that total. 2006 has been a great year in many respects and not so terrific in others. Most of us are tickled pink with the results of the November elections. In spite of a tough economy many have still been able to travel to events. Reports from many vendors indicate that the economy was not as strong as it looked to the rest of the country. We lost a lot of people this year. Many of the losses were of natural causes, but still, AIDS and drug abuse have taken their toll in a big way. With these two nemesis we have to maintain a constant vigil of safety and better judgement. »
