CineKink August 1-4
CineKink will present The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed as the CineKink Season Opener for the 21st Anniversary run of its film festival, CineKink NYC, with screenings taking place August 1-4.
Created by and starring New York filmmaker Joanna Arnow, the deadpan comedy follows a 30-something woman as time passes in her long-term casual BDSM relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family.
The selection represents a return to its roots for the festival, which grew out of the BDSM scene in New York two decades back. “The film struck a definite chord with me, and it will resonate with anyone who has navigated a dating world made even more complicated by the yearning for a particular kink,” said Lisa Vandever, CineKink co-founder and director.
Addressing her approach to BDSM in making the film, Arnow has said “In my experience, people into BDSM have to be triply communicative and respectful, and I wanted the film to convey that. In many films, BDSM just happens without conversation, which is unrealistic and unsafe. I think it can take an incredible amount of agency and power to be submissive, and I hope the film contributes to the onscreen representation of the submissive experience.”
The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed will screen on Thursday, August 1, 7 PM at The Wild Project, 195 E. Third Street, New York, NY, 10009, where the majority of the festival's screenings are also unfolding. Arnow will be on hand afterwards for a discussion about the film.
The full CineKink NYC schedule will be announced in early July and tickets will go on sale soon after.

History of WTNB
WTNB (Women, Trans, & Nonbinary Leather / Kink Social) produces Leather / Kink Bar Nights in Chicago
Now independent, WTNB was originally founded in 2016 when David Boyer recruited a few local Leatherwomen to help promote a monthly women's night at Touche.
The first time that WTNB operated completely independently of Touché was in April 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. When the bars closed down, Lee and N decided to hold WTNB online. During the Pandemic, WTNB provided valuable community support and education via Zoom from April 2020 - May 2021. Lee moderated the meetings and N scheduled a variety of remote presenters. After Covid, WTNB became a hybrid event, some returning to Touché and others attending remotely via Zoom.
In 2023 WTNB found new venues and independently produced 12 Bar Nights (with 12 Demos) and two dinners at Baton and Big Chicks. WTNB also partnered with the Chicago Leather Dyke Picnic to jointly produce approximately 11 full length kink classes at Gerber Hart Library and PLAY events at a local dungeon.
WTNB's main focus in 2024 will be on the WTNB Bar Nights and Demos. New in 2024, WTNB will also be providing support to individuals who need guidance on their Leather/Kink journey. This guidance will include opportunities for individuals to engage in accountability, access to resources such as kink-friendly mental health providers and social workers, and recommendations for further education. In keeping with these goals, WTNB will function independently, while continuing to cross-promote Leather/Kink events for WTNB people. The Chicago Leatherdyke Picnic (CLDP) will assume responsibility for the educational classes at Gerber Hart and the PLAY events in 2024. New in 2024, WTNB introduces all gender Leather/Kink events with space for WTNB people.

This will allow us to begin some of the preliminary planning as we work to ensure that LA&M is accessible and welcoming to everyone. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are off to a great start

Up Your Alley and Folsom Street Fair
Summer in the streets of San Francisco - is always a fun topic, whether reminiscing past times or plotting new adventures. There seems to be less baby strollers and bridge-and-tunnel people.
The Folsom Street has boasted upwards of 400,000 attendees and runs six blocks plus side streets and has more vendors than its younger sibling. The Folsom Street Fair will be on Sunday, September 29. Plan on plenty of parties at and around both events.

NCSF Guest Blog: Sex was God's Idea
By Dean Robertson
From “The Week” we have the following regarding; The Origins of Marriage: “The best available evidence suggests that it’s about 4,350 years old. For thousands of years before that, most anthropologists believe, families consisted of loosely organized groups of as many as 30 people, with several male leaders, multiple women shared by them, and children. As hunter-gatherers settled down into agrarian civilizations, society had a need for more stable arrangements. The first recorded evidence of marriage ceremonies uniting one woman and one man dates from about 2350 BC in Mesopotamia. Over the next several hundred years, marriage evolved into a widespread institution embraced by the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. But back then, marriage had little to do with love or with religion. What was it about then?
The story of the twelve sons of Jacob is very interesting in relation to the topic of biblical sexuality. Jacob had two wives, Rachel and her sister Leah. Each had a servant. Rachael’s servant was Bilhah, and Leah’s servant was Zilpah. Rachael’s sons were Joseph and Benjamin, and Leah’s sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulon. Now we read in Genesis chapter 30 that both Rachael and Leah, at different times and for some reason, each gave their servant girls to Jacob, “as a wife.” He therefore had sex with them both. Rachael’s servant, Bilhah, gave birth to Dan and Naphtali, and Leah’s servant, Zilpah, gave birth to Gad and Asher.
Now it is interesting to note that, in both instances, we have this expression, “gave as a wife,” and the only thing that changed in the domestic situation was that Jacob started having sex with them. By definition, as already stated, Jacob was now married to all four women. Doesn’t it therefore seem preposterous that, in today’s world, there are sections of the church that would try to say that any couple living together and having sex outside of our definition of marriage are “living in sin” when, in fact, this is the only definition of biblical marriage that we have?

Desert Smoke by PSLOD
The Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert hosted a poolside retreat at the Canyon Club Hotel in Palm Springs during the weekend of June 7-9 for a few days of fun under the sun and warm, starlit nights including a Friday welcome reception with a hosted bar, two clothing-optional pool parties, bootblacks, masseurs, barbers, and even a tarot reader, not to mention a playroom. After dinner Saturday, and before the Smoke and Mirrors play party later that night there was a meet and greet with local cigar men at the Tool Shed bar.
Both of the evening down-and-dirty smoke-friendly play parties, Friday and Saturday, were in the hotel's extensive maze and gardens.
The mornings had a hosted Bloody Mary bar and Country Music on Saturday and hosted Mimosas and light jazz on Sunday. There was a shopping excursion to a local cigar shop. Desert Smoke was within walking distance of several famous downtown Palm Springs attractions, shopping, museums, theaters, and a ride on the world's largest rotating trams to the summit of Mount San Jacinto on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Monthly Dinners is a great way...
By Ron Rassmussen
As Leatherman Will Howard of Fort Lauderdale FL wrote in the March-April issue of The Leather Journal, Leathermen gathering for monthly dinners is a great way to create social cohesion. This works so well here in the Portland OR-Vancouver WA area, where Portland Leathermen's Potluck has been a regular monthly institution since 1987. Regardless of age or profession, Leathermen gather at a different Leatherman's home on the second Saturday of each month to share food, fun, friendship, comfort, camaraderie, and laughter. Indeed, the joke is "big, rough, tough Leathermen with a casserole under the arm!"
These uplifting, affirming events offer the advantage of hugs as well as face-to-face collaboration, as we use these potlucks to organize and promote other events to benefit our larger Leather community.
This dynamic Leather community has so many ways of conveying the joy of the shared masculine experience. Whether you gather at a different restaurant each month or a different home each month, breaking bread with each other removes barriers and creates joy. Step forward, extend the hand of friendship, and you too can create strength, courage, fortitude, and joy! Bon appitit!

Leather Archives Visiting Scholar, Dr. Alexandra Fanghanel
By Gary Wasdin
The Leather Archives & Museum is pleased to announce the 2024 Visiting Scholar, Dr. Alexandra Fanghanel. Fanghanel will receive a $1,000 stipend, as well as financial support for travel to Chicago to conduct research on site in the archives. In addition to this award, the LA&M Program Committee chose to recognize applicant Alexandria Cunningham with an “Honorable Mention” for their submitted research proposal.
The 2024 Visiting Scholar, Dr. Alexandra Fanghanel, is Associate Professor in Criminology at the University of Greenwich, London, UK. She specializes in work on gender, sexuality, consent and sexual subcultures. Her forthcoming book on the topic of consent and BDSM-adjacent activities will be published with University of Edinburgh Press and is expected in 2025. Dr. Fanghanel is the author of numerous journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings and scholarly reports related to her research on non-normative sex practices and consent. She holds a PhD in Social Geography from the University of Leeds, an MSc in Gender Studies from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Law and Politics from the University of Nottingham.
Dr. Fanghanel's research at LA&M will explore the array of ways that the expression of masochistic desire has been policed, regulated, and suppressed by institutions of power. She will be using many of LA&M's archival collections, including the Society of Janus, Anthony F. DeBlase, Glenda Rider and Sarah Humble, and GMS/MA.
In addition to this year’s Visiting Scholar, an Honorable Mention has been given to applicant Alexandria Cunningham. Cunningham's research explores the various ways that Black femme/feminist/womanist thinkers conceptualize their kink identities and engage in social critique through their cultural production in order to expand our understanding of Black people’s unique
relationship to sexual and sensual pleasure. Her work will lead to the creation of “A Kinky Black Feminist Syllabus."
The annual Visiting Scholars program was created in 2010 to support researchers, writers, artists and filmmakers working in kink, fetish, leather and BDSM whose projects could benefit from LA&M’s vast archival collections. The program is funded through a generous grant from Leather Sins, hosts of Kinky Kollege in Chicago, IL.

Law or Lunacy? International Mobilization Towards Sexual Liberty Post- Op Spanner
A Research Update from 2023 Visiting Scholar Alexandra Grolimund
My project addresses ‘Operation Spanner’, a police investigation which took place in England, and its impact on SM activism domestically and abroad. The operation saw 42 men arrested and 16 charged with assault. Several of the men spent time in prison, amidst outrage that consensual sadomasochism which resulted in no lasting bodily injury could somehow be criminalized. The men appealed their sentences to no avail and lost their claim under the right to privacy at the European Court of Human Rights.

Smokeout Las Vegas
Smokeout had several hundred cigar men descend on the Tuscany Suites and Casino the week of April 3-8 in Las Vegas, NV. The weekend catered specifically to cigar and pipe smokers and those who admire them.
During Smokeout, there is always a long list of optional things to do, including open bar at the guest hospitality suite hosted by Black Boots from Salt Lake City, the registration suite with a bootblack on hand and various types of parties to which everyone was invited, or they could just relax and lounge around the pool/spa areas basking in the sun of Las Vegas. There was a smoking lounge and play area in the smoking building with equipment and music provided and staffed by the House of Peter and Friends.
Due to billing policy differences Smokeout moved from the Hofbrauhaus to the Bahama Breeze Island restaurant on Friday night. Thursday night group dinner was at Buca DiBeppo. On Friday afternoon the thing to do was go on the Cigar Crawl, visiting Las Vegas' smoke shops. Others participated in the afternoon's Strip Poker - San Francisco Rules.
The Desert Brotherhood Motorcycle Club hosted their ride to historic Eldorado Canyon, Techatticupp Gold Mine and Nelson Ghost Town, and tour the active Techatticup Gold Mine. The ride, lunch and entry fee, was provided ‘complimentary’ to those attending Smokeout. On Friday night the Chicago Hellfire Club hosted a Scotch and Cigar social. On Saturday night after dinner was Poker Party hosted by Sir Jaret.
Sunday afternoon when the week was winding down, many spent the day at Fun Hog Ranch. Fun Hog Ranch had a gear night on Saturday.
There were several vendors on hand. DJ from Maximus were the barber for Smokeout. Kuma Men's Health Club was mostly a big play party all weekend. The weather featured plenty of wind and light rain. Oh, and it was cold most days.

William (Bill) Hall, Romulan ONYX
By Mufasa Ali
It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved sibling and friend, William (Bill) Hall, Romulan ONYX. Bill was 61 years old. Bill transitioned April 22, 2024 in Chicago IL. He was born in Chicago but raised in Springfield, IL. For 28 years, Bill was the beloved husband of Mufasa Ali, ONYX Founder. He is noted and honored as the first ONYX pledge/member outside of the founding Board.
As you may be aware Bill had been suffering with many health issues stemming mainly from rheumatoid arthritis over the past several years which had made daily activity for him very difficult. He was diagnosed at 17 and has lived his entire life with this debilitating autoimmune condition, having his first joint replacement surgery at 19 and brain surgery at age 54 among many operations. Bill was left with no option but to step down from working a job that he loved as an Assistant State’s Attorney. Mufasa had been Bill's full-time caregiver.
Bill was strong and tenacious as he fought bravely against rheumatoid arthritis for many years with a never-ending smile. Throughout his journey, he endured countless rounds of medications, steroids and spent extensive time in hospitals in recent years. Bill's rheumatoid arthritis had eventually affected his lungs.
A University of Illinois and Georgetown Law alum, Bill was a member of the legal community for 30 plus years as a Public Defender, Administrative Law Judge and Assistant State’s Attorney He was an advocate and warrior for a just and equitable legal system. Bill also served many years on the boards of the Chicago Lesbian and Gay Bar Association and the Equality Illinois Legal Advisory Board.
As a member of the Leather community for 25 plus years he served ONYX Chicago/Midwest well in many capacities and mentored many throughout the ONYX family who affectionately referred to him as Uncle Bill. He often could be seen right at Mufasa's side and often referred to himself as the First Lady of ONYX.
Bill is survived by his husband, Mufasa Ali; three children, Carter, Christian, and Camran; two sisters and two brothers; the Mufasa's Pride Family; the ONYX Family and a host of Leather Community Family and Friends …..and Thor, the family companion.
Bill touched the lives of many with his infectious laughter, unwavering kindness, and boundless love. Now, it is our opportunity to come together as a community and honor Bill's memory by easing the financial strain on his family.
That's why we have created this GoFundMe campaign. Our goal is to raise as much as possible to cover the expenses associated with Bill's passing in lieu of sending flowers. A contribution will be made to the Chicago Lesbian and Gay Bar Association in his name by the family from the donations.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference and help alleviate the financial burden on his family during this challenging time. Together, we can honor Bill’s memory and provide his family with the support and love they need during this difficult time.
