2023 LA&M President's Award Presented to Marianne "Lady MJ" Candido
By Gary Wasdin
On September 9, LA&M Board member Robert Ridinger and LA&M Executive Director Gary Wasdin presented the 2023 President's Award to Marianne "Lady MJ" Candido. Lady MJ was selected for this recognition by the Board of Directors at their Spring meeting earlier this year.
Lady MJ has been an active and passionate leader of the Leather and kink community in Chicago for nearly three decades. She has created, led and supported numerous clubs and organizations including Trident Windy City, whose 30th Anniversary run provided the opportunity to present Lady MJ the award.
Lady MJ also has a long history of support for LA&M. She worked to raise the money to create the Teri Rose Memorial Library, and put in the "sweat equity" to create the space that is now the most visited part of LA&M. She continues to support the library's ongoing growth and development, making it one of the strongest and most accessible collections of published works on Leather, kink, fetish and BDSM.
The LA&M President's Award was established in 2005 by LA&M founder Chuck Renslow, to recognize and honor those who have gone above and beyond in their service to and support of the Leather community and the Leather Archives & Museum.

Titleholders take private tour of Reichstag during Folsom Europe 2023
By Victor Ongpin
As part of the special events for titleholders in the Folsom Europe 2023 Titleholder Program, a private tour of the Reichstag (historical German legislative building) was arranged for those attendees interested in learning more about the country’s unique political history.
Mr. Sister Leather 2023 Victor Ongpin, the reigning Leather titleholder of the Los Angeles Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (LASPI), joined other titleholders from around the globe to experience an enlightening and informative afternoon partaking in a walking tour of the German Bundestag (Federal Parliament) and this is his account of what transpired.
Titleholders representing France, Italy, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and the USA had the privilege of partaking in the tour and getting their questions answered one by one by Representative Drossman, who also pointed out physical structures throughout the building, including former pieces of the Berlin Wall and its significance during a dark period of a divided Germany. Conversely, with cheerful exuberance, Mr. Drossman was also passionate to share the role he has in being a resource to his Hamburg Mitte constituents and the optimism he has for LGBTQIA+ acceptance in Germany and beyond.

Austin Eagle has a new bootblack stand
By Luis Bratt
It took me a couple months, but I did find a needle in the haystack! It wouldn’t be an Eagle without our bootblacks, and we wanted to get them something special. The owner swears to God that at one point it belonged to the infamous Chicken Ranch in Texas, and that is over 70 years old. Regardless it’s a really cool and one of a kind piece (still has the oil stains from drillers the boots). Soon to be in use at The Austin Eagle.

Miguel Torres is the new IML Den Daddy
By Miguel Torres on Facebook
People that know me well know that IML is one of my biggest passions. An event that I randomly stumbled upon while walking by it many years ago, and as the years progressed I became more involved with it, first couple of years as a curious lobby attendee, then I worked on the mart as a vendor one year, then I became I personal handler for a contestant, eventually I was a contestant myself in 2014. After my contestant experience I knew I wanted to be a contestant handler and begged Daddy Joey at the time, who told me to take a year off before I join the team, so I have been a contestant handler since 2016 except last year where I got to be a judge (and that one pandemic year when the world stopped). I love being part of the team in the background whose job is to ensure the contestants have the best possible IML experience, and to help create a space where they feel confident and safe to be their true selves.
A little over two years ago, Jeff asked me to be part of his succession plan for IML den Daddy. I gladly accepted and I have been following him around closely since and learning as much as I can. The time where Jeff feels it's time to make the transition is here. Not one person makes all this happen, the success of this role is a group effort by the incredibly talented Den staff, one of the most selfless, nice and hard-working group of people I've ever met.
Jeff Tucker, you've been an inspiration to me since the day we met. Your genuine warmth and love for everything you do is something I model my life after. I try to live my life with positivity and gratitude, as hard as it is sometimes, but I know it's always worth it.
I am human, I will make mistakes, but what I do guarantee is that I will pour my heart and soul into this new challenge and I will continue to work towards making IML an event where people are celebrated for who they are, where contestants have a great experience no just through the contest but also feel connected afterwards, and a place where we know we can count on each other and help each other be better. A place where bootblacks feel as instrumental to our community as they truly are, and an event that feels like a big, fun and kinky family reunion. I don't know about you but that's the world I want to live in, and I'm grateful I get to continue to build on the rich 45 year-old legacy of IML as IML's Fourth Den Daddy.

Thank you again my brothers, ONYX and ONYX SoCal-Southwest for this awesome recognition - it means the world to me." History of Mr. San Francisco Leather Contest
By Ray Tilton
Lots of talk and people coming to me regarding the 40th Anniversary of Mr. SF Leather that was promoted as such and took place the weekend of September 8-10.
My historical and research project I did in 2013 not only thoroughly documented the Mr. SF Leather history but also documented many of the feeder/bar title contests as well. Posted without further comment.
As of August 2023, the Mr. SF Leather history and recap is: 2023 marks 41 years since the first Mr. SF Leather contest/title.
1979, ‘80 and ‘81 San Francisco sent representatives to IML.; 1982 the first Mr. SF Leather contest/title was held and sent to IML; 1985 saw no contest and a representative was sent to IML; 1986-2019 the Mr. SF Leather contest was held making it the longest running continual contest besides IML; The last Mr. SF Leather contest/title was held in 2019 for the 2020 title year. 2020/21 No contest, no IML/COVID; 2022 and 2023 no Mr. SF Leather contest and no representative sent. Mr. SF Eagle Leather sent representatives both years.
In summation, it’s been 41 years and 38 Mr. SF Leathers as of August 2023.

Lions and Rabbits, and Dogs! Oh my!
Join the San Francisco Leathermen's Discussion Group for a discussion with folks who live and breathe the world of anthropomorphism on Wednesday, September 27 at Transform 1060 at 7:30 PM. What’s being a Furry all about? What’s a fursona? How does it all work … mechanically? What goes on at conventions? How do you break into the scene? How do furries fit into the broader kink community? All this and more will be revealed, so come with your curiosity, questions, and (if you have it) gear.
The Fun with Furries! panelists will be Raj, who’s been an active BDSM player since 2011 and a furry since 2014; Loki, aka Warren the Bunslinger who has been an active member of the Leather community since 1997; and Corey Dog has been pretending to be a dog on the internet for 20 years and has been delighted at the opportunity to do so in person in BDSM contexts for almost as long.

Leather Mentorship Book Review
By Vince Andrews
Author and former NLA International President
Tebias Perry's book, Leather Mentorship, adeptly guides readers through various aspects of mentorship within the Leather community. Drawing from his own experiences, Perry provides valuable insights and practical advice. His ability to maintain a neutral tone in addressing complex subjects within Leather culture is commendable.
Leather Mentorship serves as a valuable resource for both mentors and mentees, offering a solid foundation for those seeking guidance in the Leather lifestyle. Perry breaks down mentorship dynamics, sharing his own experiences and incorporating input from other Leatherfolk, enriching the reader's understanding.
While Perry's writing style may be colorful, the book's straightforward approach appeals to a broad audience. The analogy of mentorship to a butterfly's life stages, although unorthodox, effectively illustrates the mentorship process. The book's flexible structure allows readers to adapt the content to their specific needs. Some may find it less prescriptive than desired, while others appreciate its progressive nature.
Overall, Leather Mentorship is a valuable resource, deserving of five stars, providing readers with practical wisdom derived from the author's lived experiences.
